JRG Charity Events

2010

12/11/10: Toys for Tots Naughty vs. Nice Bout.  This event was a Toys for Tots toy drive bout.  Spectators bringing a new unwrapped toy of a $10 value got into the bout for free. With the Marines assisting JRG we gathered more than 100 new toys for children in of North East Florida. We also raised $230.00 during our 50/50 raffle to purchase additional toys.

11/2010: Movember challenges men to change their appearance and the face of men’s health by growing a moustache. The rules are simple, start Movember 1st  clean-shaven and then grow a moustache for the entire month.  The moustache becomes the ribbon for men’s health, the means by which awareness and funds are raised for cancers that affect men. The funds raised through Movember’s US campaign benefit the Prostate Cancer Foundation (PCF) and LIVESTRONG, the Lance Armstrong Foundation. We raised $1215.00 for Movember and rocked some awesome moustaches as well.

11/21/10: First Coast Crime Stoppers Charity Bout was held at the Mandarin Skate Station. All proceeds from the bout went to First Coast Crime Stoppers Inc., a civilian volunteer organization formed in 2002 to better serve the citizens of the First Coast in the fight against crime.  This year we donated $800.00 to help fight crime in Jacksonville.

10/23/10: Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure 2010 was our biggest 5K yet.  Team Rollin’ for Ta-Tas participated in our 5th year and we had 55 skaters, refs, friends and family.  We raised $8,039.00 for the North Florida Affiliate.  Susan G. Komen for the Cure is the world’s largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists working together to save lives. In addition to the money raised we have 3 amazing members of our team that made the Top 50 Pink Honor Roll for fundraising.

06/19/10: Skate of Emergency bout we raised $390.00 for the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure.  This will go towards our Race for the Cure team Rollin’ for Ta-Tas.  This year’s goal is $6000.00.

03/20/10: Jacksonville Multiple Sclerosis Mud Run is a 10K race with boot camp style obstacles that have been surrounded by or consist entirely of mud. JRG had 6 teams participating in the event and in total we raised $3823.66 for the MS Foundation.  Multiple sclerosis (or MS) is a chronic, often disabling disease that attacks the central nervous system, which is made up of the brain, spinal cord, and optic nerves.

01/30/10: Spread the Love is a charity dedicated to fund-raising in order to support families and patients fighting cervical cancer and promote awareness of the importance of early detection through regular testing.  This charity was created for Stephanie aka Danger S from the Tallahassee Roller Girls because she was diagnosed with stage 4 cervical cancer.  Tallahassee is one of our sister leagues and JRG had to help out.  We went to Tallahassee to help with all day fund-raiser for Danger S and the Spread the Love charity.

2009

12/09: Sulzbacher Center Christmas Stocking Stuffer Drive was an event to gather stocking stuffers for the residents currently living in the center.   The Sulzbacher Center is a home to more than 330 homeless members of our community, many whom are children.  JRG donated toiletries, crayons, coloring books, note pads, pens and many other items to the center so these families could look forward to Christmas.

10/24/09: The Blood Alliance Blood Drive at the St. Johns Town Center. At this drive JRG teamed up with the staff of the Blood Alliance to bring in donors, escort them to the donation buses and passed out donor gift bags.

 

11/22/09: In Memory of Somer Thompson Charity Bout & Raffle.  Somer Thompson abducted and killed while walking home from school here in Jacksonville in September of 2009.  This bout was to raise money for the First Coast Crime Stoppers and the Child Alert Center Charities.  100% of the tickets sales were donated to the First Coast Crime Stoppers in Somer’s name. That amount was $1600.00 and $323.00 raised during the raffle went to the Child Alert Center Charities. First Coast Crime Stoppers, Inc., is a civilian volunteer organization formed in 2002 to better serve the citizens of the First Coast in the fight against crime and the Child Alert Center offers a fast, secure, accurate and easy-to- use service that employs the latest technology to provide widely distributed critical information that will compress the timeline between loss and hopeful recovery of your missing child.

11/21/09: Somer’s Ride was a poker run to raise money for the family of Somer Thompson.  Somer was abducted and killed while walking home from school here in Jacksonville in September 2009. The poker run toured Jacksonville with 17 stops along the path.  Riders could take part in playing a hand of poker, purchasing t-shirts or giving donations to support the family of Somer Thompson. Over 1800 riders from all over the United States participated in this event.  JRG helped get the bikers registered for the ride and helped with the poker game at the various stops around town.

10/17/09: Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure is the annual 5K run/walk for breast cancer.  The promise of the foundation is to save lives and end breast cancer forever by empowering people, ensuring quality of care for all and energizing science to find a cure. Our team had over 35 skaters, refs, friends and family that either skated or walked.  Our team Rollin’ for Ta-Tas raised $5,500.00 for the Susan G. Komen Foundation.  The Jacksonville Roller Girls were the 2nd place top fundraising and was awarded a team plaque and a pizza party.  

10/17/2009: Blocktoberfest was our last regular season home bout of 2009.  During the bout we had a charity raffle to benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Foundation.  Students from the Davis Entrepreneurial Organization from Jacksonville University also volunteered their time to help with the raffle.  Movie tickets to the IMAX theatre, wine baskets and gift cards were just some of the items raffled.  We raised $200.00 for the charity. Leukemia is a malignant disease (cancer) of the bone marrow and blood and Lymphoma is the name for a group of blood cancers that develop in the lymphatic system.

08/29/09: Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure 50/50 Raffle was held during the Down N’ Derby Bout.  The proceeds will all go towards our 2009 Race for the Cure fundraising goal.  We raised $135.00.

06/27/09: Sulzbacher Center painting project. The Jacksonville Roller Girls volunteered 5 hours on a Saturday morning to help repaint the Sulzbacher Center in Jacksonville.  The center is Northeast Florida’s only provider of comprehensive services for the homeless men, women and children.  They are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a weeks, 365 days a year to serve nutritious meals and offer a safe shelter. Also provided is outstanding health care, quality children’s programs, job placement assistance and life skills programs. JRG assisted in prepping the areas for paint and painting both of the cafeterias.

04/19/09: First Coast No More Homeless Pets charity 50/50 raffle.  All proceeds will go towards FCNMHP mission of eliminating the killing of dogs and cats in our community through free and low-cost spay and neuter programs.

03/08/09: Jacksonville Roller Girls give back to a veteran skater whose husband was in a terrible motorcycle accident in January 2009.  We sponsored a 50/50 raffle and all proceeds went to the skater’s family to help with medical bills.  The winner of the raffle even donated their winnings to the family.

02/10/09: The Blood Alliance annual Valentines event Bleed for Those In Need was a blood drive at the campus of the University of North Florida.  We helped with bringing donors into the waiting area, escorting them to the donation area and passing out donor gift bags.

2008

12/12/08: Wolfson Children’s Hospital & The Blood Alliance annual stuffed animal give away.  We started collecting new stuffed animals during our season to pass out to the children at the hospital.  We collected and passed out over 75 stuffed animals to the children.

12/2008: We purchased bears from Jared the Galleria of Jewelry Store and the proceeds benefited St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.  St. Jude conducts ground breaking research and provided life-saving care to children battling cancer and other catastrophic illnesses.  These bears were part of our donation to the Wolfson Children’s Hospital stuffed animal give away on 12/12/08.

12/09/08: The Blood Alliance Gift of Life Blood Drive is an annual blood drive held at the Avenues Mall.  This blood drive is setup to ensure Florida and Georgia has enough blood supply to cover the holidays.  At this drive we teamed up with the Jacksonville Jaguars to bring in donors, escort them to the donation buses and passed out donor gift bags.

12/07/08: The Great Hair After Barber Shop’s 1st Cut-a-Thon.  This event all hair cuts were $10 and the proceeds went towards the Hepatoblastoma Foundation.  This foundation assists children that have a rare and aggressive form of childhood cancer originating in the liver. The Jacksonville Roller Girls rallied out at the street to bring in as people customers as we could to help this wonderful cause.

11/24/08: The Blood Alliance Thanks for Giving Blood Drive is an annual event held at the St. John’s Town Center.  This blood drive is setup to ensure Florida and Georgia has enough blood supply to cover Thanksgiving.  At this drive we were holding signs at the street to bring in donors, we passed out donor gift bags and 3 skaters and 1 JRG ref gave blood.

11/15/08: Toys for Tots at the American Legion is the annual toy drive.  The primary goal of the Foundation is to deliver, through a shiny new toy at Christmas, a message of hope to needy youngsters that will motivate them to grow into responsible, productive, patriotic citizens and community leaders.

10/08/08: Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure is the annual 5K run/walk for breast cancer.  The promise of the foundation is to save lives and end breast cancer forever by empowering people, ensuring quality of care for all and energizing science to find a cure. Our team had over 25 skaters, refs, friends and family that either skated or walked.  Our team Rollin’ for Ta-Tas raised $3,548.00 for the Susan G. Komen Foundation.  The Jacksonville Roller Girls were 4th in the team standing for total monies raised. 

2007

10/20/07: Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure is the annual 5K run/walk for breast cancer.  The promise of the foundation is to save lives and end breast cancer forever by empowering people, ensuring quality of care for all and energizing science to find a cure.  We raised $175.00 for the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

07/20/2007: Henderson Haven Inc. 3rd Annual Summer Sale-ebration.  This event was a summer sale to raise funds for Henderson Haven Inc. an organization that helps to protect and support the inherent rights of all people to choose where and with whom they work, live and play.  The Jacksonville Roller Girls held a demo/public scrimmage for the sale.

04/2007: On April 7, 2007, fire claimed most of the Jacksonville Humane Society’s facilities and more than half of the 166 animals they housed that day.  Thanks to an outpouring of community support, they resumed the provision of their services from a temporary building.  The Jacksonville Roller Girls assisted the Jacksonville Humane Society by hosting an 80’s skate party and scrimmage with our friends from the Florida Coastal School of Law.  The event was held at the Mandarin Skate Station and the proceeds when to the rebuilding efforts of our Jacksonville Humane Society.

2006
